Track: Developers

In this presentation, we discuss a solution to obtain the current location of a mobile device, in the context of providing a web search service which is location aware. We discuss the solution in two steps, first step deals with obtaining the current location of the device, and the second step deals with how to use location information in web search. Though we discuss the solution in the context of a specific service such as web search, similar strategies of obtaining location information can be employed for other type of location aware services as well. Internet Connectivity to mobile devices can be of many types such as Wireless LAN, GSM 1, EDGE2, 3GSM, GPRS3, CDMA4 and so on with combinations among these. Among all these, GSM/GPRS is the dominant method of internet connection from a mobile device.
