Scottish First Minister to speak at WWW2006

The Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell is to speak at the opening ceremony of the 15th International World Wide Web Conference on Tuesday 23rd May.

Jack McConnell became Scotland's First Minister in November 2001 and was again nominated to hold the post after the general election in 2003. Prior to this he served as Finance Minister and then Education Minister for the Scottish Executive. He is also the leader of the Labour group in the Scottish Parliament.

The Scottish Executive is the devolved government for Scotland and was established in 1999. It is responsible for most of the issues of day-to-day concern to the Scottish people, including health, education, justice and transport.

The opening day of the conference, entitled The New Economy, has a strong commercial focus. Chairman of Motorola, Sir David Brown, will deliver the keynote address to an audience of top level CIOs, IT directors and decision makers from the public and private sector.

The day will reflect on the impact of web-based innovation on the world of e-commerce and more traditional business models. The speaker line-up also includes Egg founder Mike Harris, Tim Faircliff, general manager of Reuter's digital media business, and Dr Richard Smith, Chief Executive of UnitedHealth Europe and former editor of the BMJ.

The speakers will explore the implications and applications of web technology through a series of individual presentations, panel discussions and questions from the floor.
