Conference handover starts countdown to WWW2006
The closing session of WWW2005 in Tokyo today marked the begining of the year-long countdown to WWW2006.
Dr Leslie Carr, one of the WWW2006 Co-Chairs, described the conference aims to the Tokyo delegates during the handover ceremony. Wearing Highland dress, Dr Carr presented four bottles of Scottish single malt whisky to winning delegates before introducing the programme for next year's conference.
High Quality Research, Cutting Edge Development, Widening Community Involvement and Family Friendly Infrastructure were the four themes that Dr Carr emphasised. "The conference has a growing reputation for its oustanding technical quality", said Dr Carr, "but next year we will address the wider issues that adopting Web technology causes society, and that means providing high-level sessions for information and media professionals, technology consultants, social commentators and political advisors."
Conferences often keep researchers and employees away from their families for a week or more and cause many practical difficulties and frustrations, especially for those with young children. WWW2006 will be providing child care facilities to help delegates balance their work and family responsibilities, explained Dr. Carr.
